Age is Not a Limit

One of the most common misconceptions is that dental implants are not suitable for elderly people. This is completely wrong. There is no maximum age for dental implants as long as you are in good general health. We have successfully placed implants in patients in their 70s, 80s, and even 90s. Chronological age is not the important factor: what matters is your general health and your ability to participate in post-operative care. At Longchamp Dental Clinic, we evaluate each patient individually, regardless of age.

General Health Evaluation in Elderly Patients

Before placing implants in an elderly person, complete medical evaluation is necessary. We examine chronic medical conditions, current medications, and general ability to undergo minor surgery. Common conditions in elderly people like high blood pressure, diabetes, or controlled heart problems do not contraindicate implants. However, coordination with your general practitioner or cardiologist (if necessary) is important. Patients with acceptable general health can generally be treated successfully with implants.

Osteoporosis and Implants in Elderly Patients

Osteoporosis is common in elderly people, particularly in post-menopausal women. Although osteoporosis reduces overall bone density, it does not automatically contraindicate dental implants. Bone quality at the jaw may be sufficient even in osteoporotic patients. If necessary, prior bone grafting can increase available bone volume. Our team specifically evaluates jaw bone quality with 3D scan to determine implant feasibility.

Ability to Participate in Post-Operative Care

For elderly patients, the ability to participate in post-operative care is important. This includes: being able to come to follow-up visits, maintaining adequate oral hygiene (with possible caregiver help), taking prescribed medications, and following post-operative restrictions. For patients with advanced dementia or other serious cognitive conditions, participation ability may be compromised. However, with help from a caregiver or family member, even these patients may sometimes be candidates.

Treatment Adaptation for Elderly Patients

For elderly patients, we can adapt treatment for more comfort: shorter visits to avoid fatigue, carefully managed local anesthesia, and minimal surgical intervention. Sometimes placing larger-diameter implants (rather than longer) can compensate for lower bone density, reducing the need for bone grafts. All-on-4 or All-on-6 implants (for completely edentulous patients) may sometimes be a better solution than dentures.

Major Benefits of Implants for Elderly Patients

For elderly people, the benefits of implants are particularly significant. Better chewing means better nutrition, which is critical for general health and independence. Implants offer more comfort than removable dentures (easier to clean, more comfortable to wear, better stability). Implants restore self-confidence and self-image, which improves overall quality of life. Elderly patients with implants report very high satisfaction.

Implant Success Rates in Elderly Patients

Success rates for implants in elderly patients in good general health are excellent, comparable to those of younger people. One study showed that patients aged 70-80 had a 95% success rate for dental implants, similar to that of younger patients. Age alone does not affect success rate; it is rather the general health status that matters.

Mobility and Clinic Access

For elderly patients with reduced mobility, access to the clinic is important. At Longchamp Dental, our clinic in Casablanca is accessible and we can coordinate visits to accommodate patients needing help getting around. If necessary, some patients may be referred to clinics with transportation services. The important thing is not to let reduced mobility prevent you from getting the dental care you need.
