Zygomatic Implants in Morocco: The Solution When Bone Is Too Insufficient for a Standard Implant

You have lost significant bone in the upper jaw. Your practitioner has told you that a standard implant is impossible without a massive bone graft. This guide is for you.

Zygomatic implants are an advanced surgical solution that bypasses the upper jaw bone deficit by anchoring the implant directly in the zygomatic bone (the cheekbone), which is dense, stable, and unaffected by the resorption that impacts alveolar bone. Invented by Professor Per-Ingvar Branemark, this technique has over thirty years allowed treatment of cases that conventional implantology could not resolve.

When Are Zygomatic Implants Indicated?

Zygomatic implants are indicated in situations where the bone volume of the upper jaw is severely insufficient, making a large-scale bone graft impossible or extremely risky.

Patients concerned: fully edentulous upper jaw patients whose alveolar bone has resorbed over years of wearing a removable prosthesis, patients who have lost bone following a tumor or trauma, and those in whom previous grafts have failed.

In all these cases, the zygomatic implant offers a viable alternative where none existed. The pre-operative assessment is systematically performed with a 3D cone beam CT scan to plan the exact implant trajectory before the procedure.

Length, Placement and Prosthesis: What Differentiates a Zygomatic Implant

A zygomatic implant measures between 30 and 52.5 mm, two to four times the length of a standard implant. It passes through the maxillary sinus to anchor in the zygomatic bone, away from the atrophied zone.

Placement requires advanced surgical expertise and rigorous 3D planning, performed under general anesthesia or deep conscious sedation. By combining two zygomatic implants and two to four conventional anterior implants (Quad Zygoma or Bi Zygoma protocol), a complete fixed arch is achieved in 24 to 48 hours.

The great advantage: this technique allows immediate loading in many cases. A fixed temporary prosthesis can be placed the day after the procedure.
